Instruments and Bows:

Please be VERY cautious when shopping for violins or bows on auction sites. My own personal experience with eBay is that instruments are just as likely to arrive at your house broken as playable, and many companies have ridiculous procedures and policies for repairs and replacements, if they accept returns at all. Just because a seller has lots of stars doesn't necessarily mean that he or she knows anything about violins. It's really not worth the risk and the headache.

I have personally done business with the companies listed here. They are actual brick-and-mortar stores with excellent reputations. The prices are fair; although they may seem high if this is your first violin purchase, you get what you pay for. These companies stand behind what they send out the door. I also highly recommend checking your local yellow pages for violin dealers. General music stores that service orchestral strings can also a good choice, but usually only if they have professional string players working the string rentals and sales. I suggest purchasing from a local dealer whenever possible, because the instruments will already be acclimated to your locale, it's greener and it supports your local economy. Musicians have to eat and pay taxes too!

For Central Iowa local rentals, Becker's Fine Instruments is my shop of choice. Becker's rental fleet is Eastman, which are well-maintained and competitively priced. The shop also has a good selection of step-up instruments.

Potter's Violins has an excellent selection of rental instruments in different pricing tiers.

K.C. Strings is another good shop, located in KCK.
